The Saint Bernard is one of the most iconic and beloved dog breeds in the world — a massive, gentle Swiss mountain dog with a rescue heritage that has made it legendary across centuries of Alpine history. The breed was developed by the monks of the Great St. Bernard Hospice, a monastery and traveler's refuge perched at 8,100 feet in the Swiss Alps on the treacherous mountain pass between Switzerland and Italy. The hospice was founded around 1050 AD by Saint Bernard of Menthon, and the monks began keeping large dogs — descended from Mastiff-type dogs brought to the region by Roman armies — sometime in the 17th century, initially as watchdogs and companions. The dogs proved extraordinarily gifted at locating travelers buried in avalanches and snowdrifts, using their powerful sense of smell to detect humans beneath several feet of snow. The most celebrated Saint Bernard in history was Barry, who served at the hospice from 1800 to 1812 and is credited with saving more than 40 lives — his preserved body is on display at the Natural History Museum in Bern. The iconic image of the Saint Bernard carrying a small barrel of brandy around its neck is largely a myth popularized by 19th-century paintings, though the monks did sometimes send the dogs out with small casks. The Saint Bernard comes in both short-coated and long-coated varieties, always in white with red, mahogany, or brindle markings. The breed was recognized by the AKC in 1885.
